Nelly emailed Miguel her plan of action when fourth period started; then she locked her laptop in her drawer along with her phone. She’d hoped to squeeze in a few minutes to speak with the sheriff about last night’s events, but she didn’t want to keep her boss waiting. Nelly took another sip of her coffee and left the mug on her desk. She was going to need another cup to get through this day.

Emmett was leaving his room at exactly the same time as she. The man gave her an apologetic look.

“Morning, Nelly,” Emmett said, looking nervous. “How are you?”

“Fine,” she said, not asking him the same thing.

They were headed in the same direction.

“Listen, Nelly,” he said, rubbing the back of his head sheepishly. “I was wondering if you had a minute to talk?”

She had to give it to him. The man was an exceptional actor. He came off as sorry, almost repentant. His tone carried genuine concern, even a little nervousness. His gait wasn’t as certain either. He didn’t quite know whether to keep up with her or give her space.

“Sorry, Emmett,” she said. “I’m on my way to see Miguel.”

“Maybe after?” he asked.

“I’ll see,” she said. “I’ve got some work to do before fifth period.”

“I heard you were helping out with the car line today?”

He decided to match her pace. Nelly wanted nothing more than to get away from the man. But she couldn’t do that without being obvious about it. She couldn’t very well break into a run.

“Yes,” she said. “I’m happy to do my part.”

“I know you are,” he said. “And we appreciate that. Do you have any plans this weekend?”

Nelly shot him an incredulous look. First of all, what were the odds she had plans when she was new to town? And second of all, assuming she did have plans, did this man honestly think she’d share them?

“I have a few ideas,” she said vaguely.

“That’s good,” Emmett said. “If you ever need more, you should talk to my fiancée. Vanessa has lived in Overland her whole life and knows everything about this place. I’m helping out at the women’s shelter this Saturday, if you’d care to volunteer.”

Nelly pretended she hadn’t heard the question.

Emmett went on. “Then Vanessa and I might head up to my cabin for a short weekend.”

He went on and on about his cabin. Nelly stifled a yawn, not caring if she came across as bored by his story.

“You look like you could use a coffee,” Emmett said. “I’m just headed to the bathroom, then to the lounge. I can grab you a cup while I’m in there if you’d like.”

She shook her head. The last thing she wanted was this man bringing her a drink. Who knew what he’d do with it?

“No, thank you.”

“Are you sure?” he asked. “It’s no bother.”

“I’m sure,” she said. “I’ve got some coffee already back in my room.”

He nodded once, then picked up right where he’d left off about his cabin. “It’s in this lovely private community.
